The Effect of Yoga on Chronic Low Back Pain

Object: To evaluate the effect of yoga on pain, low back disability and quality of life in individuals with chronic low back pain.
Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, before and after yoga the Visual Analogue Scale scoring for pain, Quebec Low Back Pain Disability Index for low back disability level, and the Short Form SF-36 for assessing quality of life were applied to individuals diagnosed with chronic low back pain.
Results: While a statistically significant decrease was observed in the Visual Analogue Scale and Quebec Low Back Pain Disability Index values after yoga, a statistically significant increase was found in the Short Form SF-36 total values. A statistically significant increase was also found in all subgroups of SF-36.
Conclusion: In this study, it is important to show that yoga can reduce pain and low back disability with chronic low back pain and increase the quality of life of individuals. It is thought to achieve these effects by reducing muscle tension and stress and contributing to spinal posture. In this respect, yoga alone or in patients with chronic low back pain despite medical treatment and physical therapy can be considered as an additional treatment option.
