Abstract

Bu çalışma, permakültür alanındaki akademik üretimin gelişimini bibliyometrik analiz yöntemiyle inceleyerek, bilgi birikiminin evrimini, araştırma eğilimlerini ve mevcut boşlukları sistematik olarak ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır. Hızla şehirleşen toplumların sürdürülebilirlik arayışlarına yanıt veren permakültür yaklaşımının, güncel akademik yazındaki yeri nicel verilere dayanarak değerlendirilmiştir. Web of Science veri tabanında 1981–2025 yılları arasında yayımlanan 441 bilimsel yayın analiz kapsamına alınmıştır.

Scientific Production in Permaculture: Bibliometric and Visual Mapping

Year 2025, Volume: 28 Issue: 6, 1557 - 1574

Abstract

This study aims to systematically examine the development of academic production in the field of permaculture through bibliometric analysis, revealing the evolution of knowledge, research trends, and existing gaps. The approach of permaculture, which responds to the sustainability pursuits of rapidly urbanizing societies, has been evaluated based on quantitative data from current scholarly literature. A total of 441 scientific publications published between 1981 and 2025 in the Web of Science database were included in the analysis. Analysis of the temporal distribution indicates a significant increase in permaculture-related studies, particularly in 2017 (42 publications) and 2021 (53 publications). Among the most prolific researchers are Alexander Badman-King (9 publications) and Sarah T. Lovell (6 publications), while the most highly cited work is a 2015 co-authored publication by Brian Machovina, Kenneth J. Feeley, and William J. Ripple, which has garnered 281 citations. Additionally, Laurens Klerkx’s works also constitute influential contributions to the field, with a total of 304 citations. In terms of publication types, journal articles constitute the majority, totaling 321 works. Disciplinary distribution highlights environmental sciences (125 publications), agriculture (91), science and technology studies (63), educational sciences (33), and geography (31) as the primary fields contributing to permaculture research. Country-wise, the United States (90 publications), the United Kingdom (53), and Australia (36) are the leading contributors, while the majority of publications are in the English language (399). A significant portion of these works is indexed in ESCI (134), SCI-Expanded (131), and SSCI (113), reflecting the academic impact of the research within the field. Keyword analysis reveals that the term “permaculture” appears 177 times, making it the most frequently used concept, followed by “sustainability” (48 mentions) and “agroecology” (32). These findings suggest that permaculture research is generally associated with sustainable development, ecological agriculture, and holistic environmental approaches. This study reveals that permaculture research is predominantly concentrated around themes such as sustainable development and environmental systems design; it aims to guide future research by analyzing the field’s academic position, structural patterns in the literature, and existing research gaps through quantitative data.
