Leaf Physiology Differs in Drought-Tolerant and Susceptible Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) Genotypes
Abstract
Water stress significantly reduces cotton yield and quality. This study focused on the differences in the relationship between physio-morphological characteristics and yield under full and deficit irrigation conditions between tolerant and sensitive genotypes. Ten parents and their 24 hybrid combinations were tested under full and deficit irrigation conditions. According to the stress tolerance index value, 10 genotypes were tolerant, and 24 genotypes were susceptible. The relationships between physio-morphological characteristics and yield were evaluated using correlation, stepwise regression, and path analysis. Cuticle thickness and stomatal density exhibited favorable and significant associations with yield at both the flowering and boll opening stages. Drought-tolerant genotypes were found to have a higher leaf area index but lower SPAD values. Consequently, a significant negative correlation was recorded between SPAD and yield. In the tolerant group, the equation yield = 15.27 + 21.90 LAI BO + 10.17 LAI FL + 7.19 CT BO was obtained. Path analysis indicated that the highest direct effect was on LAI values during the flowering period. As a result, it has been determined that high LAI and cuticle thickness can be used as selection criteria in the selection of yielding genotypes under deficit irrigation conditions.
