Economic Analysis of Oilseed Sunflower Production in Türkiye
Abstract
The aim of this study is to conduct an economic analysis of oilseed sunflower production in farms engaged in oilseed sunflower cultivation in Türkiye. Primary data were collected through face-to-face surveys with 222 farmers located in the provinces of Tekirdağ, Edirne, Kırklareli, and Konya, which together account for more than half of Türkiye’s oilseed sunflower production. The Neyman allocation method was employed to distribute the sampled farms according to the size of their oilseed sunflower fields. According to the research findings, the average production cost of oilseed sunflower is $874.83 per hectare, of which 64.93% consists of variable costs and 35.07% consists of fixed costs. Fuel and lubricant expenses constitute the largest variable cost component (14.90%), while land rent represents the most significant fixed cost component (19.91%). The average area for cultivating oilseed sunflowers was found to be 12.32 hectares, with an average yield of 1952.70 kg ha⁻¹ and an average selling price of $0.59 per kg. The gross production value was calculated as $1304.08 per hectare, gross profit as $736.06, and net profit as $429.25. The relative profit was determined to be 1.49. Agricultural subsidies were determined to increase gross profit by 25.74%, net profit by 54.08%, and relative profit by 12.88% on farms engaged in oilseed sunflower production. Given that agricultural subsidies play a crucial role in the profitability and thus the income of oilseed sunflower producers, increasing these subsidies, ensuring their timely payment, and systematically assessing their effectiveness are essential for sustaining farmers’ engagement in sunflower production. Targeted subsidy mechanisms should be developed to reduce major cost burdens on farmers, especially fuel expenses and land rents. Specifically, policymakers may consider additional fuel support based on production quantity or cultivated area, along with land rent subsidies for tenant farmers, as concrete policy options.
