The Effect of Phenoxyethanol and Starvation Period on Stocking Density in The Transporting of Goldfish (Carassius auratus)

Abstract

In this study, the optimum dose of phenoxyethonol in juvenile goldfish (3.87 g and 4.05 cm) between 30 minutes and 15 hours application was determined. In addition, the effects of phenoxyethanol and starvation time were determined in the transport of goldfish in 1 4-1 water and 3 4-1 oxygen compressed nylon bags for 15 hours. The anesthesia entrance time of the fish was between 3 and 11 minutes depending on the dose and the exit time from the anesthesia was between 5 and 15 minutes. The anesthetic effect of phenoxyethanol on fish started from the dose of 100 µl L-1. Suitable doses of phenoxyethanol for deep anesthesia were 250 µL L-1 for 30 minutes and 200 µL L-1 for 15 hours. Starving the fish in nylon bags for 4 days provided a higher storage opportunity than fasting for 2 days (P <0.00), but phenoxyethanol application to the transport water had no effect (P> 0.05). There was no interaction between starvation time, anesthetic administration and stocking rates (P> 0.05). Overall, 100%, 98.33% and 91.87% survival rates were determined in 40, 60 and 80 pcs L-1 stocking conditions of oxygen fished nylon bags, respectively, which were starved for 4 days without using phenoxyethanol. Considering the starvation period and survival rates, the optimal stocking rate for juvenile goldfish was 60 fish per liter.
