Efficient use of natural resources has become an important issue due to
the increase in world population. To meet the increasing demand for food, there
is a need for new approaches and methods of resource management. Water is the
most essential resource for food production, and the management of water in
agriculture is an extremely important topic. Performance indicators developed
for the monitoring and evaluation of irrigation networks provide great
convenience in terms of assessing and interpreting such networks. In this
study, 11-year data (2006–2016) for the irrigation networks of Kahramanmaras,
Goksun, Andirin, Keysun and Hancagiz locating in Mediterranean Region of Turkey
were evaluated using multivariate statistical methods. Principal component
analysis was performed for these networks; component load and quality index
were calculated; the success/performance ranking of the networks was identified
based on the results. The quality index revealed that the irrigation network in
Kahramanmaras (311.96) ranked first, whereas the irrigation network in Hancagiz
(-1061.53) ranked last in terms of
success/performance. In conclusion, financial and water distribution
performance indicators were the most effective factors determining the success
of irrigation networks.
