The Effect of Salt Stress on Some Morphological and Physiological Parameters in Cockscomb (Celosia argentea var. cristata) Plants Grown in Soilless Media

Abstract

In this study, the effects of different salt doses on the development of the cockscomb plant (Celosia argentea var. cristata) were evaluated, and for this purpose, some morphological and physiological parameters were examined to determine its salt tolerance threshold. This study was carried out in unheated glass greenhouse of Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University in 2024. The study was conducted according to the randomized parcel factorial trial design, with 3 replications. Using ‘Bombay Orange’ cultivar, different salt doses (EC 0 (control), EC 30, 60, 90 and 150 mM NaCl) were applied to the growing medium. It was determined that salt treatments were significant at 1% level on morphological and physiological characteristics of the plant except number of branches and number of flowers. When the treatments were analysed in general, it was determined that the control treatments gave better results, but there were proportional decreases in other treatments in parallel with the increase in salt application doses. Compared to the control group, the application of 150 mM salt caused significant reductions of 38% in plant height and 44% in flower length. Cell membrane damage rate emerged as a sensitive indicator of salt stress, showing a significant increase even at moderate salinity levels. It was concluded that cockscomb cultivation should be carried out in environments with low or moderate salinity levels. It is concluded that cockscomb is moderately sensitive to salinity, and irrigation water EC should be kept below 30 mM NaCl (≈ 3 dS/m) to prevent significant losses in growth and ornamental quality.
