Socioeconomic Ramifications of Climate Change in the Burdur Lake Basin: Livelihoods, Agriculture, and Rural Migration

Abstract

This study explores how climate-driven changes in water availability, crop productivity, and income are reshaping rural livelihoods in the Burdur Lake Basin, a semi-arid region in southwestern Türkiye facing severe hydrological decline. Drawing on interviews with forty-one farmers across seven villages, it reveals that prolonged drought, declining rainfall, and groundwater depletion have created intertwined socioeconomic vulnerabilities. Farmers report major yield losses, rising irrigation costs, and growing uncertainty about the future of farming. Although many have adopted drip irrigation or shifted to less water-demanding crops, these measures remain limited by structural inequalities and unstable markets. Framed within political ecology, the study argues that climate change in the Burdur Basin is as much a social and institutional process as an environmental one, and that meaningful resilience requires linking technological adaptation with equity, participation, and justice.
