CORRIGENDUM “Investigation of Selected Biochemical Parameters in Buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) Naturally Infected with Anaplasma marginale” KSU J. Agric Nat, 29(5), 1119–1126, 2026 Sezai ARSLAN, Mesut ŞENEL, Taraneh ÖNCEL As the authors, in light of the scientific comments and evaluations received following the publication of our article, we consider it necessary to provide the following corrections and clarifications to ensure a more accurate and comprehensive interpretation of our findings: 1. In our study, the diagnosis of Anaplasma marginale was based on the combined evaluation of clinical findings, microscopic examination, and cELISA results. However, PCR/qPCR was not performed to provide definitive molecular confirmation at the species level. Although our findings are strongly consistent with A. marginale infection, the results should be interpreted within the context of this diagnostic approach, and species-level molecular confirmation is recommended for future studies. 2. A total of 22 biochemical parameters were evaluated in the study. The statistical analyses were conducted as part of an exploratory field investigation rather than a confirmatory study with a single predefined primary endpoint. In particular, the differences observed in serum glucose and hs-cTnI levels should be regarded as exploratory and hypothesis-generating findings that require confirmation in independent studies with larger sample sizes. 3. The high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hs-cTnI) results presented in our article were not based on species-specific analytical validation or the establishment of a reference interval for buffaloes. Therefore, the observed increase in hs-cTnI levels in the infected group should not be interpreted as definitive evidence of myocardial injury. Rather, it should be considered a potential indicator of subclinical cardiac stress associated with anemia, hypoxia, and infection, and as a hypothesis-generating finding warranting further investigation. 4. As this study was conducted under natural field infection conditions, potential confounding factors, including lactation stage, age, and farm management practices, could not be fully standardized or controlled. Therefore, it should be taken into consideration that the observed changes in parameters such as glucose and calcium may have been influenced not only by the infection itself but also by these potential confounding factors. Conclusion: These corrections do not alter the fundamental integrity of the data presented in the study or the statistical differences observed between the groups. Rather, they provide a more appropriate scientific and clinical framework for interpreting the findings and clearly define the methodological limitations and scope of the conclusions.

This study was conducted to evaluate the serum biochemical changes in water buffaloes naturally infected with Anaplasma marginale. The infection was diagnosed through the detection of peripheral intraerythrocytic inclusion bodies in Giemsa-stained blood smears, and confirmed using a competitive ELISA (cELISA) test. The study included 20 buffaloes that tested positive for A. marginale and 15 clinically healthy buffaloes as the control group. Serum samples from both infected and healthy animals were analyzed for the following biochemical parameters: albumin, total protein, total and direct bilirubin, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), amylase (AMYL), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine (CRE), glucose, calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), sodium (Na), potassium (K), chloride (Cl), creatine kinase (CK), creatine kinase-MB isoenzyme (CK-MB), C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), and high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hs-cTnI). Clinically, infected buffaloes showed signs such as fever, depression, loss of appetite, and reduced milk production. Compared to the control group, infected animals had significantly lower serum calcium (p<0.001) and glucose levels (p<0.05), along with higher hs-cTnI levels (p<0.05). No statistically significant differences were observed in the other biochemical parameters between the groups. These findings suggest that although Anaplasma infection in buffaloes often presents with mild clinical symptoms, it can still lead to hypocalcemia, hypoglycemia, and myocardial injury.
