Identifying the Factors Affecting Pesticide Use Awareness among Pear Producers: The Case of Bursa

Abstract

This study aims to assess the awareness levels regarding pesticide use among pear producers in Bursa, Türkiye, which accounts for 46.36% of the country's pear production. A total of 290 producers were surveyed face-to-face using proportional sampling, and the collected data were analyzed using basic statistical methods and exploratory factor analysis. Findings reveal that while most producers possess technical knowledge about pesticide use, their awareness of environmental and health impacts is insufficient. Pesticide application decisions are mainly influenced by dealer recommendations, and preventive spraying is commonly practiced. Furthermore, pesticide waste disposal practices pose serious environmental threats. Although producers show willingness to use less hazardous and more environmentally friendly pesticides, their confidence in reducing chemical use is low. Therefore, continuous training programs, enhanced agricultural consultancy services, and environmentally conscious agricultural policies are recommended to improve pesticide use practices.
