First report of Rice White-tip Nematode (Aphelenchoides besseyi Christie, 1942) in Düzce, Türkiye

Abstract

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) serves as the primary dietary staple for more than half of the global population, particularly in developing countries. The rice white-tip nematode, Aphelenchoides besseyi (Christie, 1942), is a seed-borne pest causing significant yield losses in rice-growing regions worldwide. Listed as a quarantine organism by the European Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) since 1981, A. besseyi spreads rapidly to uncontaminated areas through infested seeds. Identifying infested fields, determining the resistance or susceptibility of rice varieties, and clarifying intraspecific populations are crucial for effective pest management strategies. In Düzce Province, where rice is cultivated intensively, particularly with the Gönen variety, research on this nematode remains limited. Determining the resistance levels of rice varieties cultivated in the region is also essential for guiding local plant protection practices. This study aimed to detect the presence of A. besseyi in paddy fields in Düzce Province and to provide morphological and morphometric descriptions. A total of 40 seed samples were collected from different rice-growing areas. Among these, 13 samples were infested with A. besseyi, corresponding to an infestation rate of 32.5%. Infestation was detected only in the Kaymakçı region. These results emphasize the risk of further spread and highlight the importance of continuous monitoring for this seed-borne nematode. This study is the first record of A. besseyi in paddy fields of Düzce Province, Türkiye.
