Characterization of Floral VOC Composition in Natural Syringa vulgaris L. Genotypes from Van, Türkiye

Abstract

This study investigated the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in leaves and flowers of Syringa vulgaris L. using the gray solid-phase microextraction (SPME) method combined with GC–MS analysis. A total of 52 volatile compounds were identified, including 13 alcohols, 8 aldehydes, 3 esters, 1 acid, 2 ketones, 15 terpenes, and 10 other compounds. Alcohols (23.63–49.53%) and aldehydes (33.42–49.50%) were the dominant groups, with 1-hexanol, benzyl alcohol, E-2-hexenal, hexanal, and lilac aldehyde B being the major contributors. Terpenes such as α-pinene, β-bourbonene, and pentadecane were also significant, while esters like citronellyl butyrate and Z-3-hexenyl formate were detected in specific genotypes. Key volatiles, including E-2-hexenal and 1-hexanol, exhibited genotype-dependent variation, reflecting cultivar-specific aroma profiles. The results were consistent with previous studies on lilac species, indicating stability of dominant volatiles across plant organs. These findings provide valuable insights into the aromatic composition of S. vulgaris, highlighting its potential for ornamental, pharmacological, and landscape applications, as well as serving as a basis for future cultivar selection and essential oil production.
