Comprehensive Characterization of Cornelian Cherry (Cornus mas L.) Genotypes: Integrating Biochemical and Genetic Analyses for Breeding and Commercial Potential
Abstract
Cornelian cherry (Cornus mas L.) is utilized for food and traditional medicine due to its nutritional properties, bioactive compounds, and health benefits. This study aimed to investigate the biochemical and molecular characteristics of cornelian cherry (CC) genotypes grown under uniform ecological conditions in Malatya, Türkiye. Significant differences (p≤0.05) were observed among genotypes in physico-chemical parameters. Fruit weight ranged from 1.49 to 6.41 g, with genotype 44-01 exhibiting superior fruit size. Total flavonoid content varied between 29.33 and 77.68 mg QE/100 g FW, with genotype 44-04 showing the highest value, while genotype 44-06 had the highest β-carotene content (0.167 mg/100 g FW). Total carotenoid content ranged from 0.15 to 0.45 mg/100 g FW. Nine ISSR primers generated 44 bands with a polymorphism rate of 57.35%, revealing moderate genetic diversity among genotypes. Notably, genotype 44-04 demonstrated both high bioactive compound content and distinct genetic clustering. The integration of biochemical and molecular analyses provides valuable insights for breeding programs and targeted commercial applications.
