A Current Perspective on Insect Families (Class: Insecta) Evaluated as Bioindicators in Türkiye

Abstract

In this study, a general evaluation was made regarding the orders and families of insects obtained from research on bioindicator insects in Türkiye between 1988 and 2025 and in which regions the research was concentrated. The Shannon–Wiener diversity index (H′) was applied to evaluate family-level diversity for each pollution type. As a result of the studies examined, it was determined that the studies in Türkiye were mostly conducted to determine the pollution of aquatic habitats with a rate of 66%. When examining the number of insect families used as bioindicators for determining environmental pollution in Türkiye, it was found that Trichoptera and Diptera were the most studied insect groups for heavy metal pollution, Diptera and Coleoptera for water pollution, and Hemiptera and Coleoptera for soil pollution. According to the comparison of Shannon–Wiener index (H′) results, the highest diversity was calculated for heavy metal pollution (H′ = 1.97), followed by soil pollution (H′ = 1.82) and water pollution (H′ = 1.78).It is the first study to comprehensively evaluate the situation throughout Türkiye.
